Dr. John Michael Moschella is a three-decade, career veteran of the Revere (Massachusetts) Fire Department, having attained the rank of Deputy Chief. As Visiting Assistant Professor at Anna Maria College (Paxton, Massachusetts) he has written and teaches such courses as Fire and Emergency Services Administration, Applications for Fire Research, Disaster Planning for the Fire Service, and Evaluating Community Services, as well as other fire and emergency management related courses in both the undergraduate and graduate schools. He has chaired the writing of over two dozen master’s thesis.
Moschella holds a Master of Arts Degree in Fire Science and Administration from Anna Maria College and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Cambridge College. His dissertation examined graduate fire centric programs offered both in the U.S. and internationally and was published in the United Kingdom.
In addition, he has been awarded graduate degrees in European Intellectual History from Salem State College and German/Jewish History at the University of Kansas. Previously, he studied Biblical Archaeology at Hebrew Union College in Israel and German History at Universität Friedrich Alexander, Erlangen, Germany on a Fulbright.
Author of numerous fire-related publications in various journals, Moschella, has written on such fire related topics as: sensemaking, e-government, higher education in the fire service, firefighter safety, hazardous materials, building construction, private fire brigades, manhole emergency operations, OSHA standards compliance, and currently leadership styles of fire chief officers. Moschella co-wrote the state’s hazardous materials response training program.
Moschella is a program evaluator for the American Council on Education. In addition, he is a frequent contributor to and current editorial board member of the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management (Oklahoma State University) and the Journal of Emergency Services (U.K.). He holds several NFPA certifications, and is a licensed social studies teacher (grades 7-12) in Massachusetts. He is a National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer, and a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers. Dr. Moschella was the first recipient of the National Fire Protection Association’s George D. Miller Award, in 2002.
